James Baldwin one said: “You write in order to change the world…if you alter, even by a millimeter, the way people look at reality, then you can change it.” That is the mantra of Mary Carreon, OC Weekly’s cannabis reporter. In the last six months she’s helped launch their new canna-blog PotPlus, which focuses on cannabis news, reviews, events and politics on the local and state levels. She also won first place in Public Affairs at the Orange County Press Club for her cover story “How Irvine Became SoCal’s First Non-Toxic City;” an account of the grassroots group Non-Toxic Irvine and how they swayed the city to ban toxic-pesticides that led to a spike in pediatric cancer diagnoses within Irvine.
Carreon is passionate about the environment, pesticide-free plant medicine and clean water. Her commitment to move the masses is what motivates her to stay healthy, and keep learning, writing and evolving. She’s on Twitter and Instagram as @Maryyystardust.
