Joe Mathews is California and Innovation editor for Zócalo Public Square, a media nonprofit and affiliate of Arizona State University. His weekly syndicated Connecting California column for Zócalo appears in 30 media outlets around California.
Joe is co-author, with Mark Paul, of California Crackup: How Reform Broke the Golden State and How We Can Fix It (University of California Press, 2010), and author of The People’s Machine: Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Rise of Blockbuster Democracy (PublicAffairs, 2006).
Joe serves as co-president, with Bruno Kaufmann of Swiss Broadcasting, of the Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy, a global network that studies initiative, referenda, and new forms of deliberative and participatory democracy. (The next forum will convene in Rome’s city hall, September 26-29, 2018). Joe also served as Irvine senior fellow at the New America Foundation, and was a reporter at the LA Times, Wall Street Journal and Baltimore Sun.
Joe, a Little League coach, lives in the San Gabriel Valley with his wife and three young sons.
